MIDNIGHT
MARAUDERS
Midnight Marauders was an intriguing
and smartly paced collection that ranged from descriptive verbal
essays on city life to confrontational taunts, comic expositions,
denunciations, and even quasi-religious theorizing.
While their celebrated hip-hop/jazz
roots were often evident, the group also utilized fusion, urban
contemporary, Afro-Latin and funk samples, while Q-Tip's rap
style could be cool and deadpan, reflective, analytical, satirical,
or disgusted and angry.
There was precious little gangsta
posturing or sexist rhetoric, and such numbers as "Sucka
Nigga," "God Lives Through," "Electric Relaxation"
and "Award Tour" were cleverly delivered and brilliantly
composed. Ron Wynn for allmusic.com
